A force feedback wheel is one of the few peripherals that genuinely changes how a game plays rather than just how it feels. It's also one of the few where a large share of buyers use it twice and then store it under a bed, because they bought it for a game that didn't need it.
The games that justify it
Simulation and simulation-leaning racing titles — the ones modelling tyre slip angle, weight transfer and surface grip. In those, force feedback is information: you feel the fronts losing grip before the car visually understeers, and you correct earlier than you could with a controller. That's a measurable improvement, not an immersion argument.
Arcade racers apply steering assist and simplified physics. There's less information to transmit, and the handling models are frequently tuned around a controller's limited steering range. A wheel there is a novelty.

The pedals matter more than the wheel
This is the most consistently useful advice in sim racing and the most consistently ignored. Consistent braking is where lap time comes from, and a potentiometer pedal measures how far you've pushed while a load cell pedal measures how hard you're pushing. Human beings are far better at repeating a pressure than a distance, which is exactly why real brake pedals work on pressure.
If you're choosing between a better wheel and a load cell brake, buy the brake. You'll be more consistent, and consistency is the whole game.
Mounting is not optional
A wheel clamped to a flexing desk transmits its own movement instead of the car's, and under strong feedback it will move. That undermines the entire reason you bought it. Your options, in ascending order of cost and quality: a solid desk with a proper clamp, a dedicated wheel stand, or a full cockpit rig.
Direct drive in particular puts out enough force that a rigid mount is a safety and functionality requirement rather than a refinement. Budget for the mount as part of the wheel purchase, not as something you'll sort out later.
Wheels, pedals and rigs
Buy in this order: wheel and pedals together, then a rigid mount, then upgrade the brake pedal. A mid-range wheel on a solid stand beats a high-end wheel on a wobbling desk.
Platform compatibility: check before you buy
Console wheels require official licensing to work with that console's authentication, and a wheel licensed for one console family will generally not work with another. PC-only wheels are frequently better value but are exactly that — PC only. Some wheel bases support multiple platforms through swappable rims or firmware, which is worth paying for if you own more than one machine or expect to change platforms.
Verify compatibility with your specific console generation, not just the brand family. This catches people out regularly.
Buying used
Racing wheels are excellent secondhand purchases. They're mechanically simple, failures are usually obvious immediately, and a large share of the market consists of people who bought one, used it briefly, and want the space back. Test all axes, both pedals, and the feedback motor under load within your return window. Check for belt slip on belt-driven units and for play in the wheel shaft.

The verdict
DEPENDS on the games. If you're playing simulation racing, a wheel is the single biggest upgrade available to you and the answer is an easy yes. If you're playing arcade racers, it adds novelty and not much else — buy a good controller.
If you are buying: a mid-tier belt-driven wheel with a load cell brake on a solid stand beats a high-end direct drive clamped to a flexing desk, every time. Spend on the pedals and the mount before you spend on the base.
