Black Friday 2026 Gaming Laptops: What to Look For

The category with the most misleading specifications in computing. Two laptops with identical GPUs can perform 30% apart, and the listing will not tell you which is which.

DEPENDS
DEPENDS — there are real bargains, but the GPU name on the box tells you far less than cooling, power limits and the panel. Buy a desktop instead if you never actually move it.

Gaming laptops are heavily discounted every November and are simultaneously the hardest gaming purchase to evaluate. The reason is straightforward: the same GPU can be configured to draw wildly different amounts of power in different chassis, and the resulting performance gap is large enough to matter while being almost invisible on a product listing.

What actually determines performance

FactorWhy it matters
Power limitThe most important spec nobody advertises. The same GPU in a thin chassis can perform dramatically worse than in a thicker one because it is allowed less power
Cooling designDetermines whether the machine sustains performance or throttles after twenty minutes. Reviews reveal this; spec sheets do not
Display panelRefresh rate is advertised; brightness, colour accuracy and panel type frequently are not
RAM and storageBoth are usually the cheapest thing to upgrade later. Do not overpay at point of sale
Keyboard and trackpadYou will use these constantly. They vary enormously and are rarely mentioned
Build and hingeThe most common long-term failure point on laptops
The rule that saves the most money: find a review of the exact model number, not the product line. Manufacturers ship several configurations under one marketing name, and the differences between them are frequently larger than the differences between brands.

Should it be a laptop at all?

Be honest about portability. A gaming laptop costs substantially more than a desktop of equivalent performance, runs hotter, is louder, has a shorter useful life, and is much harder to upgrade. All of that is worth paying for if you genuinely move it. None of it is worth paying for if it lives on one desk.

What works

  • Buy a laptop if: you move between locations regularly, live somewhere with no space for a tower, or need one machine for work and play
  • Modern efficiency has narrowed the gap considerably
  • A single machine for everything has real practical value
  • November is the best pricing window of the year for them

What doesn't

  • Buy a desktop if: the machine will not move. You will get substantially more performance per dollar
  • Desktops are upgradeable, quieter and last longer
  • A handheld plus a desktop often serves better than one laptop — see handhelds
  • Laptop screens are frequently the weakest component and you may want an external monitor anyway

The wider platform question is in PC or console in 2026, and budget builds are covered in the under-$500 setup guide.

Judging a laptop deal

  1. Identify the exact model number and find a review of it. Non-negotiable in this category.
  2. Look for the GPU power limit in that review. It is the number that predicts performance.
  3. Check whether RAM and storage are upgradeable. Soldered RAM caps the machine's useful life.
  4. Check the panel specs beyond refresh rate. Brightness and colour matter for actually looking at it.
  5. Compare against last generation. A previous-year flagship at a real discount frequently beats a current mid-tier model.

One relevant note

If you were buying a laptop specifically to play Grand Theft Auto VI, do not. There is no PC version and no announced PC date — see why there is still no PC date and the PC build guide for the longer view.

The verdict

Cooling and power limits decide gaming laptop performance, and neither appears on the listing. The model number and a review of that exact model are the only reliable path to a good purchase.

DEPENDS — genuine bargains exist, particularly on previous-generation flagships. But if the machine will not leave your desk, a desktop gives you considerably more for the same money.
