Black Friday 2026 Handhelds: What's Worth It

A memory shortage rewrote handheld pricing across every brand this year. That makes November discounts harder to read than usual.

DEPENDS
DEPENDS — judge every handheld discount against its street price six months ago, not against MSRP. Some of this year's 'deals' are just prices returning to normal.

Handheld gaming PCs had a difficult 2026. A memory shortage pushed pricing up across effectively every brand, and the market has not fully settled. That makes Black Friday discounts in this category genuinely harder to evaluate than in any other, because the reference price you remember may no longer exist.

We covered the underlying situation in handheld gaming prices are out of control.

The field

Our full head-to-head is in the best handheld gaming PC of 2026. The short version for buying purposes:

DeviceBest for
Steam Deck OLEDThe most coherent overall package. Valve's software layer is still the best on a handheld, the screen is excellent, and compatibility labelling saves real frustration
ROG Xbox AllyWindows flexibility and access to every storefront, with more raw power than the Deck
ROG Xbox Ally XThe premium tier — whether the gap over the standard model is worth it is covered in our comparison
Legion Go 2The most hardware for the money in raw terms, with the usual Windows-handheld software friction
The recurring lesson in this category: raw specifications matter less than software. A Windows handheld gives you every storefront and every game, and also gives you Windows on a seven-inch screen. Valve's controller-first interface remains the single biggest quality-of-life difference, and it is not visible on any spec sheet.

How to judge the discount this year

  1. Find the street price from six months ago, not the MSRP. Given 2026's pricing turbulence, MSRP comparisons are meaningless in this category.
  2. Check whether the discount is on a superseded model. Sometimes an excellent deal, sometimes a device about to lose software attention.
  3. Factor in storage. Base-configuration handhelds fill up immediately, and expansion is an additional cost you should include in the comparison.
  4. Count the accessories you will need. A case and a screen protector are not optional for a device that leaves the house.

The alternatives worth considering

Two adjacent options are worth weighing before committing to a handheld PC. The Switch 2 plays games nothing else plays and is a fundamentally different proposition. And Valve's Steam Machine covers the living room rather than the commute — compared against consoles in our three-way.

The honest position

What works

  • November is still the best pricing window of the year even in a difficult market
  • Last-generation models frequently offer the best value once the new tier arrives
  • Handhelds genuinely change how much you play if your gaming time is fragmented
  • The used market is healthy and worth considering — see our used-buying guide

What doesn't

  • 2026 pricing volatility means percentage discounts are unusually misleading
  • Base storage configurations are inadequate on almost every model
  • Windows handhelds carry real software friction that no spec sheet shows
  • Battery life across the category remains the weakest link

One relevant note: Grand Theft Auto VI has no PC version and no announced PC date, so no handheld plays it. If that was part of your reasoning, see why there is still no PC date.

The verdict

Handhelds are worth buying and this is the right week, but 2026's pricing chaos means you have to do more homework than usual to know whether a discount is real.

DEPENDS — compare against six-month street prices rather than MSRP, budget for storage and a case in the same purchase, and weigh Valve's software advantage against Windows flexibility honestly.
