Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no PC version at launch and no announced PC date. Within those platforms, the hardware question is narrower than most people assume.
The most important fact
Rockstar captured the 26-minute Extended Look on a base PlayStation 5 — not a Pro, not a PC, not a target render. Character switching between Jason and Lucia was demonstrated running in seconds on that hardware, in a map Rockstar states is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's.
That is a strong statement about the baseline. Whatever the Pro adds, the base console is clearly the reference platform.

The upgrade question, answered honestly
What works
- Do not upgrade if: you own any PS5 model or any Xbox Series console. The reveal ran on base hardware
- A PS5 Pro purchase should be justified by your whole library, not by one undefined enhancement label
- Series S owners will get a visually reduced but complete game
- Sony has stated the DualSense haptics and speaker are used, which is a controller feature you already have
What doesn't
- Do consider spending if: your console storage is nearly full
- Your controller is drifting — eighty hours will not be kind to it. See the drift guide
- You are still using TV speakers — audio is the biggest perceptual upgrade per dollar
- You do not own a current-generation console at all
Storage is the real hardware problem
Rockstar has not published an install size and we will not guess one. What is certain is that a state-sized map with a full city in it, plus a day-one patch, will be substantial — and that Series S has the smallest usable internal storage of the generation, making it the most likely to need expansion.

If you need to buy a console
This is the one genuinely large purchase in play, and it is mostly a library decision rather than a GTA 6 decision — both platforms run the game. Current pricing, including the effect of the August 2026 Xbox price increase, is covered in which console should you buy for GTA 6.
Watch for holiday console bundles. If you need the hardware anyway, a bundle during the November window is frequently better value than buying console and game separately.
