Every "best budget Hall Effect keyboard" list talks about rapid trigger and actuation range. Almost none of them show you an actual measured latency number next to the price. We pulled together the real figures.

Hall Effect keyboards are sold almost entirely on two numbers: actuation range (how finely you can set the trigger point) and rapid trigger sensitivity (how fast the key resets). What's missing from nearly every buying guide is the number that actually determines whether any of that matters — measured input latency, in milliseconds, from keypress to USB report.

We're not running our own bench lab. What we've done instead is compile the actual measured numbers that independent testers and reviewers have published — not manufacturer marketing claims, not "big performance numbers," but real figures from real test methodology — and lined them up against price. The gap between what boards cost and what they actually deliver is bigger than the marketing suggests.

The headline finding

The generic sub-$50 mechanical keyboard — fixed actuation, no rapid trigger, the kind that ships in every "best budget gaming keyboard" viral video — measured around 8 milliseconds of input latency in independent reviewer testing. Every Hall Effect board in the table above beats that by a factor of 10 to 50, including boards costing a third of the Wooting flagship price.

That's the real gap worth knowing before you spend: it's not premium Hall Effect versus budget Hall Effect. It's any Hall Effect board versus a fixed-actuation mechanical keyboard. Once you're in Hall Effect territory, the latency differences between a $75 board and a $175 board are real but small — fractions of a millisecond that most players will never consciously perceive, even at a competitive level.

Where the extra money actually goes

If measured latency differences between tiers are this small, what does the premium price buy? Based on the specs and reviews behind these numbers: build quality (aluminum chassis vs. plastic), software depth (Wootility's per-key, per-direction rapid trigger tuning is more granular than most budget web-based configurators), acoustic engineering (foam layering, dampened bottom cases), and polling rate consistency under RGB load. The DrunkDeer A75 Ultra in particular has been called out by reviewers specifically for making "an honest argument against spending twice as much" — it's within half a millisecond of boards costing significantly more.

What's Good

What's Not

  • Latency test methodology varies significantly between reviewers — treat any single number as an estimate, not a lab-certified spec
  • RGB lighting can measurably increase latency on some boards unless a dedicated low-latency mode (like Wooting's Tachyon) is enabled
  • Budget Hall Effect boards under $75 often cap out at 1,000Hz polling and plastic builds — the latency floor is good, but everything else is cut
  • "8,000Hz polling" on a spec sheet doesn't guarantee the internal scan rate matches — marketing peak numbers can hide slower real-world performance
The Manual's Take

If your budget caps at $75–150, the DrunkDeer A75 Ultra is the strongest latency-per-dollar pick in this table — it's within half a millisecond of boards costing significantly more. If you want the deepest software control and don't mind paying for it, the Wooting lineup remains the reference standard specifically because of Tachyon Mode and per-key rapid trigger tuning, not because it's dramatically faster on paper. Either way: any Hall Effect board beats a fixed-actuation mechanical badly enough that the switch technology matters more than which specific board you buy.
