Should You Buy REPLACED?

WAIT

Play on Game Pass, don't buy. The art and atmosphere are stunning. The combat is divisive. With a 79 Metacritic and 76% Steam rating, REPLACED is the kind of game that's worth experiencing but not worth full price. If Game Pass isn't an option, wait for a sale.

What It Is

REPLACED is a 2.5D cinematic action platformer set in an alternate 1980s America scarred by nuclear catastrophe. You play R.E.A.C.H. — an artificial intelligence trapped in a stolen human body — navigating Phoenix-City as you uncover the Phoenix Corporation's organ-harvesting horror operation.

The hook is the visual style: hand-drawn pixel sprites layered onto 3D environments with cinematic camera work, a downbeat synthwave soundtrack, and Blade Runner-meets-Akira atmospheric design. Sad Cat Studios spent over five years building this game (multiple delays), and the craftsmanship shows in every frame.

The Divide

Reviews are split in a specific way: everyone agrees the art, sound, and atmosphere are exceptional. Disagreement starts at gameplay. Critics who clicked with the combat (slow, deliberate, parry-and-shoot rhythm) called it satisfying. Critics who didn't found it clunky, repetitive, and unforgiving — IGN scored it 7/10, citing "a system update" needed to iron out bugs.

Steam users echo this split: 76% positive across 1,500+ reviews. The negative reviews consistently cite checkpoint distance becoming unreasonable in the back half, telegraphing issues with platforming, and stealth sections feeling out of place. The positive reviews say the atmosphere and story carry past those rough edges.

Replaced is a stunning shell with nothing inside. The world is gorgeous. The gameplay kept reminding me why I put the controller down in the first place. Other reviewers found the opposite — "an audiovisual masterpiece with a gripping story that stumbles gameplay-wise here and there." Your mileage will vary.

Why Game Pass Changes the Math

REPLACED is on Xbox Game Pass day one. If you have an active sub, this is a no-brainer — try it for free, finish it if you click with the combat, drop it if you don't. This single fact removes most reasons to buy at full price. The PC version on Steam is $24.99 (a meaningful saving over AAA pricing), but Game Pass converts the buying decision into a try-before-you-commit decision.

The Case For and Against

BUY IF...

  • You're a cyberpunk fan who values atmosphere over mechanics
  • You don't have Xbox Game Pass and prefer ownership
  • You loved games like Deus Ex, Ghostrunner, or Stray's vibes
  • 11–12 hours of beautifully made content for $25 is your value sweet spot

PLAY ON GAME PASS / SKIP IF...

  • You have Game Pass — just play it there, no downside
  • You need crisp, responsive combat (this isn't that)
  • You bounce off slow-burn 2D platformers
  • Series S users — known launch issues (most fixed by now, verify before buying)

Price & Value Math

$24.99 for 11–12 hours is fair value on paper (~$2/hour). But REPLACED's value proposition is wrecked by Game Pass. If you have the sub, the game costs you nothing additional. If you don't, the question becomes whether the art and story are worth $25 to own. For most players, the answer is "wait until it hits $15" — which it will, given the mixed reception.

The Bottom Line

REPLACED is a beautiful, ambitious, divisive game. Sad Cat Studios delivered on the visual promise of the trailers — what they didn't quite nail is the gameplay loop that has to carry you through 12 hours. Play it on Game Pass if you can. Wait for a $15 sale if you can't. Don't buy at full price unless atmosphere alone is enough for you.
