What It Is

Resident Evil 2 Remake is Capcom's 2019 ground-up rebuild of the 1998 PlayStation classic. You play either Leon Kennedy (rookie cop, first night on the job) or Claire Redfield (college student looking for her brother) as Raccoon City succumbs to a zombie outbreak. Both campaigns interweave — playing both gives you the full picture of the night.

Built on Capcom's RE Engine, this was the game that proved the engine could deliver on AAA survival horror. It's also the game that kicked off the modern Resident Evil renaissance — without RE2 Remake's success, RE3 Remake, RE Village, RE4 Remake, and RE Requiem might never have happened.

Why Everyone Says It's Essential

Multiple reviewers list it as a top-3 entry in the entire franchise. Steam community consensus calls it 'one of the best remake games on the market.' The atmospheric tension (especially the Mr. X stalker), the resource scarcity that forces real decisions, and the dual-protagonist replay value all hold up perfectly six years later.

Five extra game modes (Ghost Survivors, 4th Survivor, Tofu mode) extend the value substantially. Two main playthroughs (Leon A/Claire B or vice versa) plus the secondary scenarios mean 30+ hours of meaningful content.

Resident Evil 2 Remake is everything a remake should aspire to be. It captures the feel of the original almost perfectly while updating and improving almost everything. Fans of the franchise and newcomers should enjoy themselves greatly. If you like killing zombies, you owe it to yourself to try out RE2 Remake.

The Case For and Against

BUY IF...

  • You're new to Resident Evil — this is the best starting point
  • You want true survival horror (resource scarcity, methodical exploration)
  • You love stalker enemies (Mr. X is the genre benchmark)
  • You want high replay value across multiple campaigns and modes
  • $20 or less on sale fits your budget

WAIT IF...

  • You want fast-paced action — this is deliberate horror
  • Backtracking through familiar areas frustrates you
  • You can't handle stalker tension (Mr. X will haunt you)
  • You bounced off RE7's first-person perspective — this is third-person, more traditional

Price & Value Math

Standard $39.99, but historically discounted to $15-20 multiple times per year. Six years post-launch, this is one of the best value propositions in the AAA horror catalog. Across Leon A/Claire B (or vice versa) plus Ghost Survivors, expect 25-30 hours minimum, more if you're a completionist.

The Bottom Line

Resident Evil 2 Remake is required reading for any horror fan and the best entry point for anyone considering the franchise. If you're new to Resident Evil, start here. If you've played it, replay it — it's still that good.
