Saros vs Returnal: Which Should You Buy?

Published April 18, 2026 · 6 min read · By The Manual

Housemarque's two third-person bullet-ballet roguelikes occupy almost the same shelf — same studio, same DNA, same DualSense magic. But they're not interchangeable. Saros (releasing April 30, 2026) is a deliberate evolution of Returnal's 2021 formula, not a remake or expansion. The right pick depends on what you actually want.

Here's the honest comparison.

Returnal

PS5 + PC · 2021
DEPENDS

If you've never played Returnal, buy Returnal first ($30-40 on sale, available now). If you've already platinumed Returnal, pre-order Saros — it's evolved enough to feel fresh. If you want one PS5 roguelike at the lowest cost, Returnal wins on price. If you want the newest, sharpest version of this design philosophy, Saros wins.

What Each Game Is

Saros

Saros is Housemarque's first major release since their 2021 acquisition by Sony. You play Arjun Devraj, a Soltari Enforcer hunting answers on the shape-shifting planet Carcosa. The big mechanical evolution is permanent progression — every death gives you upgrades and weapons that carry into your next run. Runs are designed for ~30-minute chunks instead of Returnal's marathon sessions, with shortcuts back to base after each boss. PS5 Pro support uses the latest PSSR upscaler with increased base render resolution at 60fps.

Returnal

Returnal launched in 2021 as Sony's first true PS5 showcase title. You play Selene, an astronaut crashed on the alien world Atropos, dying and returning over and over while the world rearranges itself. It won numerous Game of the Year awards and remains, for many critics and players, the best PS5 game in the catalog. The PC version released in 2023 with full ultrawide and graphics options. Five years on, it still benchmarks the bar for what DualSense haptics can do.

How to Decide

PICK SAROS IF...

  • You played Returnal to completion and want more of that DNA, refined
  • Permanent progression matters to you (Returnal's resets frustrated you)
  • You own a PS5 Pro and want a brand-new showcase title
  • 30-minute runs fit your schedule better than 1+ hour Returnal sessions
  • You want the newest, most polished version of this design

PICK RETURNAL IF...

  • You've never played Returnal — start here, it's $30-40 on sale right now
  • You only have a PS5 (no Pro) and budget matters
  • Cosmic horror atmosphere appeals to you more than action-mystery
  • You want a game with established community resources and guides
  • You play on PC — Saros isn't available there

The Bottom Line

Returnal is the safer financial bet and an objectively complete experience that's only gotten cheaper. Saros is the newer, sharper iteration with quality-of-life improvements (permanent progression, shorter runs, return to base after each boss) that address Returnal's main complaints — but at $70 and PS5-exclusive.

If you've never played either: buy Returnal now for $30-40, finish it, then decide if you want Saros at full price. If you loved Returnal: pre-order Saros. If you bounced off Returnal because runs felt too punishing, Saros's design changes are specifically for you.
