Xbox Black Friday 2026: Which Box, and Is It Worth It?

Xbox raised prices in August 2026. That changes the Black Friday calculation more than any discount will.

DEPENDS
DEPENDS — Series X if you want the full experience, Series S only if you understand the storage problem you are buying into. Judge every discount against the pre-increase price, not the new one.

Xbox hardware prices rose in August 2026. Any Black Friday discount you see in November is being measured against that new, higher baseline — which means a headline percentage may leave you paying roughly what the console cost in July. That is the single most important thing to know before you buy.

Series X or Series S

Series XSeries S
TargetFull-fat current-gen experienceBudget entry point
DiscsAvailable on disc-equipped modelsDigital only
StorageLarger internal drive, expandable via proprietary cardsThe smallest usable internal storage of the generation
GTA 6Runs at full detailMicrosoft requires every title to ship on Series S, so it runs — at reduced resolution and texture quality
Real costHigher upfront, fewer surprisesLower upfront, plus an expansion card you will probably need
The Series S trap: its internal storage is the smallest of the current generation, and expansion uses proprietary cards that cost meaningfully more per gigabyte than a standard PS5 M.2 drive. Two modern AAA installs will fill it. If you buy a Series S, budget for the card in the same purchase, not six months later.

What actually discounts

Game Pass versus buying

The subscription-versus-ownership question is genuinely close and depends almost entirely on how many games you play per year. We ran the break-even maths in Game Pass vs buying games in 2026, and the short version is that light players lose money on subscriptions while people who play five or more new releases a year usually win.

One thing subscriptions cannot do is give you Grand Theft Auto VI. It is a $79.99 purchase on both platforms with no subscription route, which is worth factoring in if you were planning to replace game buying with a subscription this winter.

If you already own an Xbox

What works

  • Storage is the purchase that matters, particularly on Series S
  • A second controller if you play locally — see couch co-op setup
  • A headset, if you are still using TV speakers
  • Longer-term Game Pass, if you already know you use it

What doesn't

  • Do not buy a Series X to replace a Series S mid-generation unless storage is the reason
  • Do not treat the August price rise as a reason to panic-buy
  • Xbox expansion cards are expensive per gigabyte — check whether a cheaper external drive covers your actual need first
  • Do not stockpile discounted games during a GTA 6 playthrough

For the wider platform decision see which console for GTA 6 and PC or console in 2026. Storage specifics are in the storage guide.

The verdict

The August 2026 price increase means a Black Friday discount on Xbox hardware is partly just a return to where prices were. Measure any deal against the older price, not the current sticker.

DEPENDS — Series X if you want the real thing, Series S only with an expansion card budgeted in the same purchase. Bundles remain the best value in the week either way.
