The Backlog Plan Before GTA 6

A roughly 80-hour game lands on November 19. Whatever you are playing now, you will not be playing it in December. Here is how to spend the time before then.

DEPENDS
DEPENDS — on how much time you actually have. The one universal rule is not to start something enormous you will abandon mid-story when the 19th arrives.
Updated September 2026 after the gameplay reveal, which put a developer playthrough at roughly 80 hours. The staging below is relative to the November 19 launch rather than to a fixed week count.

Grand Theft Auto VI releases November 19, 2026, and a developer playthrough was cited at roughly 80 hours for a story-focused run in a map three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. Whatever else you had planned for the winter, that is what your winter now is.

The purpose of a run-up plan is not to cram in as many games as possible. It is to avoid the specific failure of starting something long in October and abandoning it permanently in November.

Stage 1 — Now through late October: finish something

Pick games you can genuinely complete. The right length in this window is 15 to 30 hours, not 80.

The wider set is in short games you can actually finish and open-world crime games before GTA 6.

The one exception worth making: if you have never played Red Dead Redemption 2, start it now rather than later. It is the design ancestor of GTA 6 and it needs 50-plus hours. Starting it in late October guarantees you abandon it.

Stage 2 — October: sort the hardware

Do this before the launch window rather than during it. Storage stock and pricing both move during major releases, and Black Friday 2026 falls after November 19, not before.

  1. Free console storage. Uninstall anything untouched in 90 days. Move what you can to external drives. Only then buy. See what to buy.
  2. Check your controller. Eighty hours will expose a drifting stick. Repair, replace or Hall effect.
  3. Audio, if you are on TV speakers. The cheapest meaningful upgrade to how the game feels.
  4. Do not buy a console upgrade. The gameplay reveal ran on a base PS5 — the hardware guide covers why.

Stage 3 — Early November: buy and prepare

Stage 4 — Launch week

Leave storage headroom for the day-one patch on top of the base install. Expect download infrastructure to struggle on the night. Treat social media as somewhere you do not go until you have played it. The detail is in the launch checklist and what to expect from launch week.

What not to do

What works

  • Finish two or three mid-length games you already own
  • Buy hardware in October when stock and pricing are normal
  • Buy GTA 6 before November 20 for the bonus, at Standard
  • Play something mechanically different from GTA so you do not arrive fatigued

What doesn't

  • Do not start an 80-hour game in October — you will abandon it
  • Do not buy a console upgrade for undefined PS5 Pro enhancements
  • Do not stockpile discounted games you will not reach until spring
  • Do not leave storage until launch week — see what not to buy

The verdict

The plan is simple: finish two things you already own, sort storage in October, buy before November 20, and stop starting games in the final fortnight.

DEPENDS on your available hours — but the mistake everyone makes is the same one. Do not begin something enormous in the last six weeks. It will sit unfinished until spring, and probably forever.
